South Carolina passed a bill allowing insurance companies to file Family Leave Insurance (FLI) policies in the state. Carriers may begin filing their non-mandatory FLI policy forms as of May 21, 2024.
 

Key Dates

May 21, 2024: Once the policy is approved, insurance carriers can begin offering FLI to employers in South Carolina on an optional basis.

No, this is not a mandatory program. South Carolina’s insurance code now allows insurance carriers to offer Family Leave Insurance coverage in South Carolina on an optional basis.
Coverage may be offered to employees for the following leave reasons:
  • To care for a family member with a serious health condition
  • To bond with a child during the first 12 months after the child's birth, adoption or placement for foster care
  • For a military exigency or to care for a military family member who is injured in the line of duty
