Meet HSI Instructor Jayne Minshall

Jayne Minshall develops and facilitates a variety of insurance-related virtual webinars throughout the year for Hartford School of Insurance (HSI), and is responsible for training agency account managers and producers.
She joined HSI in 2003 after spending 8 years in an agency, and prior to that held a role as a Commercial Lines Underwriting Manager for Kemper Insurance in Orlando, overseeing all lines of commercial insurance, including workers compensation, commercial auto, general liability, umbrella, property and marine. Minshall also holds a B.S. degree in mathematics from Ohio State University.

After graduating from Ohio State, she originally planned to attend graduate school and teach mathematics. However, after attending a recruitment presentation given by an employee of The Hartford, she was interested to learn all the paths that could be explored in an insurance company, from loss control to marketing and more.

Soon after, Minshall ended up getting a job with Kemper Insurance, first as a property underwriter and soon after as an Underwriting Manager – but it wouldn’t be long before her passion for teaching emerged.
“Fairly early in my career, I realized that I could continue to do what I enjoyed in my new role,” said Minshall. “Whatever job you are in, you’ll find a way to tap into your passion. My passion has always been teaching.”

Teaching in the Insurance Industry

Minshall began hiring and training people at Kemper, and her office became known as a training ground for new recruits.

From Kemper, Minshall later went to work for a commercial lines agency, which enabled her to see the industry from a different point of view. In 2003, she joined HSI and began teaching courses out of Florida, where she resides.

“It was like teaching college level classes,” said Minshall. “The classes were full of young adults who chose to be there and wanted to learn – the group I had always wanted to be involved with, regardless of subject matter.”

Within a few years, her role at HSI expanded geographically and she began to travel more. After three years of travel a new opportunity presented itself that would enable her to stay closer to home and still continue to teach.

In 2008, Minshall began to teach webinars on a wide range of insurance topics. Not only could she now spend less time traveling, the webinars also empowered insurance professionals from all over the country to receive high-quality training without leaving their desks.

Benefits of Virtual Education

It’s not only lack of travel that appealed to Minshall, but the other opportunity that creating webinars affords: a chance to spend time researching instead of traveling.
“I really love to conduct research,” said Minshall. “And it helps me to continue to improve the webinars.”
Many of the attendees of the webinars are new producers and CSRs, but depending on the subject matter, industry professionals of all levels attend. Some of the webinars can have nearly 1,000 attendees.

According to Minshall, some of the most popular classes remain things that people work on every day. For instance, the Certificate of Insurance is a widely attended course. Other popular courses include General Liability - Additional Insureds, Umbrellas and Workers Compensation Experience Rating.

Minshall currently resides with her family in Florida, and when she’s not researching or teaching insurance, one of her hobbies is playing tennis. She enjoys it because it’s not only exercise, but a mind game as well, and also a chance to socialize. She also enjoys spending time with her grandchildren and mentoring younger people.

“While all the instructors at HSI have different personalities and styles,” said Minshall, “We all have passion for what we do and strive for excellence.
