The Hartford created a unique educational guide on fire safety, Fire Sense®: A Smart Way to Prevent, Detect and Escape Home Fires, to support our mission of teaching the public about fire safety.
Fire Sense covers the most common causes of residential fires, lifestyle changes that can reduce one's risk, and what to do if fire strikes. Here's what's included:
- A customized personal risk assessment tool that was developed in collaboration with a leading fire scientist. It features a series of behavioral and environmental questions to assess a family's likelihood of having and surviving a home fire. Respondents receive an individualized "score." Check it out here.

A focus on the 65+ age group. Older adults are affected most by the power of fire and account for a disproportionate number of home fire fatalities. As a result of normal physiological changes that occur with age, older people – even those in good health – are less able to withstand the physical trauma of a fire.
