Small business owners are trying their best to protect their employees even in these challenging and uncertain economic times, according to The Hartford's 2012 Small Business Success Study. Only one-quarter (24 percent) are shifting the cost of healthcare to employees, and even fewer are reducing employee benefits (17 percent).
Short- and long-term disability and life insurance are among top benefits that small business owners are considering adding to their benefits package, according to LIMRA's study.
A key finding: Younger companies are more likely to add a benefit than older firms. LIMRA found that 14 percent of companies that were in business from one to nine years plan to add benefits. A stark contrast to companies of 20+ years: only two percent of these firms will add benefits.
New and expanding companies were also most likely to expand their benefits package. All told, it appears that the small business segment offers prime potential for new business in 2013. When devising your strategic sales plan for the year, keep it high on your list.
